Add this option to the poll as well to get a realistic picture:
I will not buy a house tomorrow (even if I was promised a GC this evening) because we are in a recession and/or the real estate market is spiralling downwards.
Now is *exactly* the right time to buy a house (at least in California). The prices are not spiraling down (they've already hit bottom). The interest rates are low and prices are low.

Since you colleague friend is a doctor doing medical research , it is possible he might have been been harrased or it is possible the IO did him a favor by letting him in with 5 days I-94.
Medical researcher are usually on J-1 visa or H1B visa. Unlike companies these H1b visa are exempt from cap requirements and hence can have nearly any starting date.

I speak from personal experience some time back when a friend of mine lost his temporary faculty job in India but he had H1B visa valid for 15 more days. My US university offered to take him back on his visa.So he immediately flew back,and IO@POE@BWI asked him not to delay filing the extension.

Hence if the visa was expiring in 10-15 days then it was the IO who was generous because he let him in so that you can it renewed here.(J-1 extension is easily done by univ itself in one day,H1b extension is valid once the papers are filed with USCIS cand an be easily expedited).

I have asked contact details for his friend and I will make sure that he gets in touch with IV so that IV can do something about it.

There is no divide and rule policy by US as giving H1 does not mean that you have to file for Immigration, It is the choice of the person to get immigrated to US and US has set some policies by quota system. If you don't like it then no one is forcing you to stay back (US will say that if u sue USCIS).
Thought to chip in my 2 cents as you are showing similarities of british raj and US. First of all it was the fault of the kings in India during that time who were not united enough to kick them out.

Definitely this is one of the favors to ask the law makers in these days of retrogression. Let the I-140 and PD available to the worker and let the labor substitution go with the date of transfer to the new worker. This releases the stranglehold of the employers.

I dont see any problem if we align with like minded orgs. If we allow today Murthy to take credit, then we are mis-directing our fellow immigrants who would be comng down the years here. They all believe Murthy is for immigrants and fall in their trap.

This provision helps to assure that all available Employment preference numbers may be used. In recent years, the application of Section 202(a)(5)(A) has occasionally allowed oversubscribed countries such as China-mainland born and India to utilize large quantities of Employment First and Second preference numbers that would have otherwise gone unused.
For example, let us assume that 11,600 Employment Second preference numbers are available in a calendar quarter. There is heavy Employment Second preference demand by China-mainland born and India applicants; however, each country is oversubscribed and would ordinarily be limited to about 800 of the available numbers due to the prorating provisions of INA Section 202(e). Applicants from other countries that have not yet reached their per-country limit have reported a total demand of 6,500 numbers. After taking the worldwide demand into account, it is determined that as a result of the China-mainland born and India per-country limits only 8,100 of the total available Employment Second preference numbers would be used in that quarter. In this instance, the otherwise unused 3,500 numbers could then be made available to China-mainland born and India regardless of their per-country limits. Though I am posting very late, I fully agree with the intent of the thread starter. If there is anything that we can convince the "balanced" law makers, it is the discrimination based on country based quota.
A person with certain skill set brings same and equal benefits to this country. S/He is hired because the economy of this country needs him/her. Then why issue green card to one because s/he was born in XYZ country and why ask another to wait almost endlessly because s/he was born in ABC country. This is absurd, unjust, unfair and discriminatory, particularly considering the values that United States respects, believes in and follows.
We can sell only this one point to law makers. Selling an idea on how much benefits we bring to this country, and if we can buy homes with 20% down payment, is like waking up a person who is pretending to be asleep. They have decided not to buy that argument no matter what. And then there is Dick Durbyn, Grassley, Jeff Sessions, Steve King and many like them...............

This border patrol authority applies 100 miles from International border. Guess what, most of US population is in that region, all of NJ, MA, most of CA, etc etc as all are within 100 miles from the border (including the sea border, which marks international maritime border). Though not normally done, Border Patrol can set up checkpoints anywhere in this region. I remember reading in depth of this ridiculous rule sometime back.
Found this when I googled. Borderpatrol seems to have the authority to do whatever they did within 100 miles off any international border. It falls under 8 CFR 287.1. Entire state of NH is within 100 miles of Canada.
